Much love to Karen and family. Deidre was a friend from our arrival in Australia in the 60s. Deidre was funny, musically gifted, and a marvelous teacher. What a fantastic cook she was as well. She made my wedding dress. What a lovely person she was and a great and loyal friend to my late mother and father. She will be much missed.

Oh Karen, I am so terribly sad to read of Deidre's passing in the paper today. Your wonderful Mum was such a dear friend to the Hughes family and I have so many lovely memories of her. She and Mum were hugely supportive of each other as young teachers at Norlane High and that friendship was strong enough to last decades, able to simply pick up where they had left off, even if years had passed in between. Mum and Dad had huge respect for her and her courage in coming to Australia as a young mum with you, and I know they loved her very much. For me personally, Deirdre was a huge presence throughout my childhood. I remember her as being so accomplished in so many crafts and skills and she did a lot for me. She made my First Communion dress, my confirmation dress and my wedding dress too! She was always so kind towards me, she was so often 'there for me', even when I was an annoying teenager. She was the original 'domestic goddess' who probably never realised the difference she made at different times in my life. When I came back to Geelong in 2010 I got to catch up with her a few times and now I have to live with the regret that I wasn't able to get back in touch with her after Covid and lockdowns. Dear Karen, the tears are flowing for Deidre here today. Please know how much we cared and my sisters also send deepest condolences to you and to Peter, Alex and Alby at this time.  Requiescat in Pace, dear Deidre. Much love Anna-Marie (Shew)

Thinking of Karen, Peter, Alex, Jake and Alby as they say goodbye to their mother and grandmother. For me there will be many wonderful memories of Deidre as a most professional and supportive colleague at Norlane High School. I remember enjoying her senior needlework and Home Economics students showing us the excellent work they had produced. I will also have fond memories of all those trips we shared to Melbourne to attend Opera Australia performances, and in later years there were the MSO concerts here in Geelong. Our little Norlane High lunch group will be missing a very special lady, but she is now at rest.
