Michael Allen Richards

16/09/1943 - 02/06/2023

In loving memory of Michael Allen Richards who sadly passed away on 2nd June 2023
Dearly loved husband of Biruta
Loved father of Shane and Brent

Born in Frankston Victoria only son to Sydney and Winifred Richards who met during their time as Officers in the Australian Army. Michael was happy young boy and the apple of their eye.
He attended Mentone Grammar School and was a keen sportsman for both the school and his local Football Club the Pearcedale Baxter Cats.
His Family moved from Frankston to Baxter where they had a farm and raised chickens and he bred Shetland Ponies.
After finishing school Michael went on to work for the Melbourne City Council with a key highlight including sharing the elevator at The Melbourne Town Hall with the Beatles on their way to the balcony to greet their screaming fans.
Later Mike’s sense of adventure led him to apply to be a Kiap (Patrol Officer) in Papua New Guinea working for the Australian Government.
Michael loved the sense of adventure that this position brought with it and spent many patrols into remote parts of the PNG jungle and was stationed across many varied locations from he star mountains, the Western District and through to coastal postings on both the mainland of PNG and also at Konos, Namatanai and Kavieng on New Ireland before moving to the Southern Highlands at Mendi.
On leave from PNG in 1969 Mike met his true love Biruta through friends. In 6 weeks he managed to convince Biruta to cancel her trip to Europe and come to PNG to marry him instead. Armed with a suitcase, a wedding dress and a wedding cake in a box Biruta boarded a plane to Daru and the were married in a little church and the adventure began. Two boys followed shortly after with Shane arriving after a plane trip to Port Moresby in 1971 just in time to share his dad’s birthday. While Brent arrived with assistance of a nurse at Kavieng in 1972. Michael, Biruta and the boys returned to Australia in 1979 and moved onto their farm in Wooreen in South Gippsland not far from Leongatha. With two strapping boys and farm… Michael and Biruta did such a great job at farming that they both chose alternative careers 🙂
It was always very amusing to them that they didn’t switch from square bales to round bales until after the boys left home…

Michael and Biruta always supported their sons sporting and social interests which ranged from road and track Cycling to Basketball Netball, Badminton, Swimming many more besides.
One of the boys keenest pursuits was joining the Newly formed Tarwin Netball and Football club where Mike would have a long term commitment. Michael filled many key roles from the 3rds bus driver and water carrier eventually through to Committee member Club Secretary. Michael continued on to administrative roles within the Alberton Football League including a time as League President.

After selling their farm Micheal and Biruta were able for a brief time to move to Tarwin Lower to their dream home. Unfortunately Michael’s illness hampered their travel and retirement dreams and eventually led them to move to Geelong. Michael was cared for very well by the staff at Wallace Lodge who showed great patience generosity and care in his latter years.

Michael was always well known for he sense of humour, generosity of spirit and love for his wife and family.

He passed peacefully after saying good bye to his sons and with his loving wife Biruta at his side.

He will be greatly missed by many and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
