Much loved son and stepson of Jan and Don, Barry and Doreen.
Cherished brother and brother-in-law of Samantha and Ralph.
Loved family member of the Dunell Clan.
He danced, he surfed, he loved truly.
And we loved him back.

My beautiful husband Brett Smith died on 29/12/22 after an almost 7-year fight with melanoma at aged 50. We have 3 children, Rio 13, Eden 11 and Sid 9 who are as you can imagine heartbroken.

Brett faced his diagnoses and many operations and treatments over the years with unwavering optimism. Brett was my loving husband, a caring and patient father to our children, a carpenter, teacher, surfer, artist, adventurer, a rock star, an open and kindhearted soul.

I urge everyone reading this to look after your skin in the sun, Brett’s cancer was a direct result of UV exposure that started with a rapidly growing mole on his head. It spread to lymph nodes in his neck and eventually metastasized in his liver, lung, bones and abdomen.

It is an insidious cancer that kills 1300 people a year in Australia, it is the second most common cancer in men and the most common cancer in the 20 – 39 age group. So please book a skin check and look after your skin in the sun, it just might save your life.

I have set up a donation page through the Melanoma Institute Australia if you would like to make a donation in lieu of flowers. Hopefully they can find a cure one day, Brett’s life was definitely extended with the help of the new immunotherapy drugs that are now available.
